Lucky

We were at the local Open intake shelter in Philadelphia when a man walked in with a little white pitbull looking to surrender the dog. The pitbull was skinny with a horrible skin infection on his back. The shelter informed the owner they were full and the dog would most likely be killed if he surrendered the dog today. The owner then replied, “sounds good to me.” Our hearts broke watching the dog look up at his owner with devoted eyes. He was clearly strongly bonded to the human who was handing him over to be killed.

We were full at the time and running on very limited resources but we couldn’t let the little white pitbull die. Our friends from Redemption Rescues in NYC stepped in and putting our resources together we were able to pull the dog from the shelter and put him in a foster home.

The foster named the little white pitbull Lucky and while he clearly had a rough start in life, his luck was changing. Lucky went straight to the vet and got treatment for his skin condition, antibiotics for intestinal parasites and ear medication for badly infected ears. We also discovered that Lucky was deaf. His former owner was complaining at the shelter that the dog “didn’t listen.” And didn’t seem to realize his dog was deaf 🙁

After Lucky’s skin healed up, he went back to the vet to be neutered and have a polyp removed. After a few days of healing, he was ready to be adopted! The great news was he already had a home waiting for him. One of the fosters co-workers has met Lucky and fell in love. And the feeling was mutual!

Lucky is doing great in his new home. He has some quirks that come from being deaf and also being abandoned but his new dad is devoted to him and loves how loyal and affectionate he is. We couldn’t be happier for Lucky. He landed in a great home with someone who adores him. We want to thank Redemption Rescues for being our partner in Lucky’s rescue and also Lucky’s foster dad who stepped up last minute to foster. And of course, Lucky’s adopter, Andrew who is giving Lucky the life he always deserved.
